I attempt to avoid hyperbole in the composition of this review, but it is simply impossible. I have been moved by everything about this book. I have had many a movie bring a tear to my eye. I have never had a book do the same. As the tear from my eye made contact with one of the final pages of this book, I knew. I knew this was most likely the most impactful book that I have ever read. In the intricate weaving of the story, in the depth of the characters, in the eloquent prose set forth by this gifted author.

As I give this novel a rating of five stars, I feel compelled to lower any other five star ratings one notch in order to give due justice to this one. It is that good. As I turn pages towards the end of a novel, I typically feel an anticipation for what is to come, the closing of the story, however it plays out. I felt the direct opposite in this case. With every page turned, I felt a sadness growing within. I didn't want the story to end. I wanted it to continue on, not letting go of the magical, powerful, and sometimes overwhelming feelings that consumed you in the words on a page.

This is the beauty of the written word. Strung together in just the right combination of syllables, one is able to transcend the earthly world and enter a place where you feel embedded in the lives of fictional characters around you. Except, they aren't fictional. They are real in your mind and alive as ever. You feel their joy, you sense their pain, you travel the emotional roller coaster with them every step of their way. This is the gift of a storyteller, thank you Ms. Stedman. I have been touched by this book in a way that, ironically, no words can touch.
